Kalifornia Queen on top in Diana-Trial
There was a surprise in store in Sunday’s G2 Gestut Rottgen Diana-Trial at Hoppegarten, but certainly no fluke as Kalifornia Queen (Ger) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) emerged on top for the Henk Grewe stable.
Runner-up in the course-and-distance Sea the Moon-Rennen conditions event on her 3-year-old debut May 10, Stall Torjager=s homebred chestnut was held up with one behind early by a confident Clement Lecoeuvre and hugged the hedge all the way to the final turn. Diving up the inner asthe gap widened upon straightening for home, the 12-1 shot seized the lead approaching the furlong pole en route to an authoritative 1 3/4-length success from fellow outsider Snow (Ger) (Sea the Moon {Ger}).
